The Empire State VI – current training vessel for SUNY Maritime College – made its first stop on what will be its final “summer at sea” term before it is replaced with NSMV 1 (Empire State VII) in 2023. Departing New York on May 27, the crew of more than 400 cadets and 81 faculty, staff, and crew will make a 75-day journey with stops at ports in Philadelphia, Porto, Portugal, and Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Marking the occasion, SUNY Maritime hosted a reception for cadets, alumni, and the on-site staff at Philly Shipyard, Inc. and TOTE Services which also included tours of the current training vessel. Alumni and cadets were able to tour Philly Shipyard and get a first look at NSMV 1 while still under construction.
You can keep up to date with the new build project right here on the “Around the Shipyard” blog as we publish progress photos each month – here’s the latest gallery from May!
